MultiTherm PG-1® is a high quality food grade mineral oil for use in closed loop, liquid phase heating and cooling systems to 600°F.
Purpose
MultiTherm PG-1® food grade mineral oil has been successfully used in over thirty-five different industries. In the Chemical Process Industry, it is used for temperature control of batch reactors, in heat recovery from process streams and exhaust gases and in large central systems where multiple heat users are involved. In the Food Process Industry, MultiTherm PG-1® is used in indirect heating loops for deep frying and baking. In the Plastics Industry, it provides accurate temperature control for platens, molds, extruders and laminating rolls. For Die Casting, MultiTherm PG-1® provides low maintenance control for die temperature.
The unique formula of MultiTherm PG-1® assures performance without the potential problems of many conventional fluids.

Specifications
MultiTherm PG-1® food grade mineral oil meets the specifications of 21CFR 172.878 which covers the use of White Mineral Oils in Food according to the limits and conditions of the regulation. It is also chemically acceptable for use as a heat transfer fluid in plants operating under the Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection Program.
Efficient
Lower Operating Costs
The energy required to achieve a process heat load can be influenced by the physical properties of the fluid (density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, specific heat). MultiTherm PG-1® properties result in more efficient use of energy than many other fluids. Low pressure drop reduces pump horsepower requirements. Heater outlet temperatures can be reduced since MultiTherm PG-1® has a high heat transfer film coefficients allowing lower approach temperatures.

Lower Equipment Costs
Fluid properties can also affect equipment costs. Many conventional fluids have high viscosity at ambient temperatures and can require oversized pumps and/or heat tracing equipment to facilitate cold startups. MultiTherm PG-1® is pumpable to -13°F with a centrifugal pump, so start-up problems are minimal. Its high heat transfer film coefficient can reduce the heat exchanger area required for a given heat load. MultiTherm PG-1® also has low vapor pressure which can allow specification of lower cost, low pressure expansion tanks, piping and process equipment.
Non-Fouling
Long Term Temperature Control
All organic heat transfer fluids undergo thermal degradation over time. Conventional synthetic fluids or low quality oils will form soft carbon material (sludge) that eventually coats all system surfaces, and can form a hard coating. Because the coating acts as an insulator, heat transfer rates are reduced resulting in longer heat up time, lower production rates, changes in control response and, in extreme cases, burnout of heater tubes or electrical elements.
With non-fouling MultiTherm PG-1®, these problems disappear. As it degrades, it produces small carbon particles that do not stick to system surfaces, but remain suspended and are easily drained or filtered out. Since heat transfer surfaces remain clean, system performance remains constant.
Lower Maintenance Costs
System downtime due to mechanical seal failure, sludge build-up or heater burnout can result in lost production time as well as extra direct maintenance cost. MultiTherm PG-1® can help reduce these costs. It has lubricating properties that reduce wear on mechanical seals and packing glands. The fluid is chemically inert and will not attack seals or gaskets. System cleaning is reduced since any carbon formed can be filtered or drained from the system. By eliminating maintenance problems, MultiTherm PG-1® helps reduce the costs.
Non-Toxic
Promotes Plant and Personal Safety
MultiTherm PG-1® food grade mineral oil has distinct advantages over many synthetic heat transfer fluids. It contains no components recognized as Hazardous Chemicals under OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. There are no Reportable Substances under SARA Title III (302) (304) (311) (312) (313). The fluid does not normally cause skin irritation on contact. Vapors may have a mild odor but do not normally cause respiratory irritation. All these advantages combine to provide a safe, user friendly alternative to synthetic fluids.
